Life presents us with all sorts of priorities.

YES! Gold can tarnish, too. 24K gold is pure gold, but any other karat weight of gold is mixed with other metals. This strengthens it so that it is more suited for life as jewelry, but it also introduces small amounts of metals that can oxidize (tarnish). 

The lower the number, ie, 14K, 8K, etc. the more "other" metals are mixed into the gold.

Oxidizing (commonly called “tarnish”) can give copper a darker patina, often deliberately done by jewelers to highlight designs in the metal or wirework.  Colors can also be applied to copper by flame, acids, inks, etc. Some of these may have a lacquer coating applied to protect the patina. It is best to check with the jeweler if you don't know if it's coated.
